RELIEVED: Robyn and Lauren Halkett outside their house just metres from where the blaze was stoped
Firefighters are being praised for their efforts in containing a blaze yesterday afternoon.

McNee Street resident Robyn Halkett said local fire fighters and residents helped her terrified daughter Jess who was home alone prepare for the fire.

“She was absolutely hysterical but people helped her clear the gutters and water down the house,” she said.

Robyn and her husband Peter arrived home just before the fire hit and were amazed to see so many fire tankers outside the houses.

“It really was very reassuring to see so many people we don’t even know be willing to stand in the line of fire and defend our homes,” she said.

“There was a truck outside every house and when a tree in our neighbours front yard caught on fire they were quick to jump on it.

“We were all a little on edge but were very grateful for the professional service provided."

BURNING BLAZE: Property under threat in McNee Street Broulee
Fire fighters are continuing to work on a blaze that ripped through more than 30 hectares of bush endangering property late yesterday afternoon.

Some 30 fire vehicles and more than 100 volunteers fought the blaze which started at the southern side of the Broulee village according to Eurobodalla Fire superintendent, Andrew Stark.

“We were very concerned with this fire and had crews all over the Eurobodalla to assist,” he said.

“It was a very dangerous fire with temperatures over 35 degrees and north westerly winds gusting over 50 kilometres an hour."

Fire fighters from Narooma, Dalmeny, Tuross, Moruya, Candlagan, Malua Bay, Surf Beach, Batemans Bay, Long Beach and South Durras Rural Fire Brigades assisted in the battle.

The Moruya and Batemans Bay NSW Fire Brigades were also on hand to protect property.

The main concern for firefighters was protecting houses in McNee Street as well as protecting property on Broulee road.

The Candlagan Fire Station was also under threat from the blaze with firefighters needing to relocate their private cars when the fire surrounded the station.

The Broulee Surf Club and Caravan Park were placed on alert once the blaze reached Bengello Beach and burnt up the sand dunes before a bulldozer established a containment line.

Police were forced to shut Broulee Road and Grant Street to allow firefighters to work safely.

Fire authorities are yet to determine the cause of the blaze and are treating it as suspicious, according to Andrew.

“Investigators will be moving to the scene later today once mopping up is complete,” he said.

Eurobodalla (Broulee) fire could be work of arsonist

Eurobodalla fire could be work of arsonist

An arsonist is suspected of causing a fire in the Eurobodalla region yesterday.

The fire started behind houses on the southern side of Broulee yesterday afternoon and firefighters spent last night ensuring it did not reach the airport.

The attack came soon after exhausted firefighters finally managed to control a 400 hectare blaze in remote gorge country in the Wadbilliga National Park, north-west of Bega.

There have been a number of other suspicious fires in the Broulee area in recent years and the Rural Fire Service's Andrew Stark says it was fortunate that resources from the major fire north-west of Bega were on hand to help douse the outbreak at Broulee.

"Investigators from the Rural Fire Service and police will be looking at the cause of that fire," he said.

"It's a matter of examining the forensic evidence and that can [take] some time, but we're certainly on to it and are determined to find whoever is responsible as quickly as possible."

Broulee FIRE!

Yesterday about 1pm a bushfire broke out near the top corner of our street in Broulee. The NSW Rural Fire Service came to the rescue with several appliances forcing the fire away from homes & were able to let the fire burn through to the beach just 1 street away from us. The fire caused lots of thick smoke & burned out about 30ha of bushland just to the southwest of Broulee.
Homes along McNee St were directly threatened during the day on 21/01/07.
